In the debut episode of the VA Tourism Podcast for 2025, Kojo Bentum-Williams sat down with Penny Fraser, the Sales, Sponsorship & Partnerships Director at RX Africa, to dive deep into the dynamic shifts redefining Africa’s luxury tourism market. As the driving force behind flagship events such as Africa Travel Week and ILTM Africa, Fraser shared her perspectives on the continent’s emerging status as a premium travel destination, the growing demand for sustainable and authentic experiences, and the innovative strategies propelling the sector forward.
Fraser highlighted that the global surge in luxury tourism is paving the way for African destinations to capture a share of this lucrative market. “The appetite for luxury travel is growing worldwide, and many African nations are now capitalizing on this trend by curating bespoke experiences that merge entertainment, relaxation, and exclusivity,” she explained.
She noted that in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the tourism industry has undergone a remarkable revival, driven by heightened health and safety standards. “Post-COVID, there’s been a distinct shift—not just in individual travel, but in family travel as well. In 2021, we witnessed a more than 200% increase in family-friendly tour bookings, highlighting a renewed desire for shared, high-end experiences,” Fraser observed.
With international arrivals in Africa reaching 96% of pre-pandemic levels in 2023—compared to a global average of 88%—destinations like Mauritius, Seychelles, and Kenya are leading the charge. Meanwhile, emerging markets such as Rwanda and Benin are also making their mark. “Africa stands apart by offering a unique mix of personalized safaris, deep cultural immersions, and secluded beachfront escapes. This combination positions us strongly as the global luxury sector expands,” she added.
Challenging traditional notions that equate luxury solely with lavish infrastructure, Fraser emphasized that true luxury lies in the experience itself. “Luxury isn’t just about upscale amenities—it’s about the authenticity of the encounter,” she said. Africa’s rich tapestry of cultural heritage—from intimate visits with remote tribes to explorations of ancient historical sites and eco-luxury adventures—provides experiences that deeply resonate with discerning travelers.
Imagine exclusive safari journeys, immersive cultural encounters, or serene retreats along pristine coastlines; these are the kinds of experiences that set Africa apart in the luxury tourism arena.
Sustainability also plays a pivotal role in this narrative. Fraser pointed out that many high-end resorts are now integrating eco-friendly practices with premium services, ensuring that tourism not only delights but also preserves the environment and benefits local communities. “The fusion of luxury with responsible tourism is key—it’s about safeguarding our heritage and environment for the future,” she explained.
While destination marketing organizations across Africa are beginning to tap into the luxury niche, Fraser believes there is ample room for further growth. “We have tremendous potential to expand Africa’s luxury tourism market. There’s a real need for more education and support to unlock this potential fully,” she noted.
A cornerstone of RX Africa’s strategy is to empower small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) within the luxury space. Fraser elaborated, “At ILTM Africa, we’re committed to providing platforms for SMEs to shine—whether it’s through showcasing luxury handbags made from recycled materials or highlighting wine brands with a focus on conservation. These initiatives not only spotlight sustainable choices but also integrate SMEs into the broader luxury tourism value chain.”
Looking ahead, ILTM Africa 2025 promises a host of innovations designed to elevate the event’s impact. Among the new features is the “In Conversations With” series—a relaxed forum where industry professionals can exchange insights on emerging trends and challenges in luxury travel across Africa.
The event will also offer a specially curated luxury networking schedule, taking attendees on an immersive tour of Cape Town’s rich cultural, culinary, and venue landscapes. “From meticulously arranged flight itineraries to personalized appointment schedules, every detail is designed to create a seamless experience,” Fraser explained.
Advanced business matching technology will further enhance the networking experience, pairing travel trade professionals with compatible partners to foster meaningful collaborations. Cross-border partnerships are set to further cement Africa’s reputation on the global luxury travel map.
Hosted at Cape Town’s iconic Norval Foundation—an international museum adorned with African art—the 2025 edition of ILTM Africa will provide a visually and culturally inspiring backdrop for networking and discussion. “The venue itself is a celebration of African creativity, making it a perfect setting for high-level dialogues,” Fraser remarked.
Beyond the event, ILTM Africa is committed to fostering year-round engagement through webinars, resource-sharing, and continuous networking opportunities, ensuring that the value of the event extends well beyond its three-day schedule.
With these groundbreaking initiatives and a forward-thinking approach, Africa is not only riding the wave of luxury tourism but is actively shaping its future. As Fraser aptly summarized, the focus is on creating transformative, sustainable experiences that redefine luxury and showcase the very best of what Africa has to offer.
